about

Forget Me Not is an original contemporary dance ballet featuring life-sized puppets which tells the story of three main characters and their families as they are affected by Alzheimer's and dementia. Created by Vortex Dance Company and Strange Fangs Song Factory, and produced by SRO Productions III. It premiered in fall 2018 in Binghamton, NY. All proceeds were donated to The Memory Maker Project, a NY nonprofit that brings art into the lives of people living with memory loss.

The music is the story of three characters. Gilbert is represented by the piano, Alberta (whose real-life inspiration played the accordion as a younger woman) is played by the accordion, and Tony is in the score as the cello. Violins (performed by my dear friend Micah Banner) and other symphonic instruments often serve as characters we only glimpse for a moment, or the backdrop against which the main characters live and interact.
As in life, I hope that the uncomfortable parts are balanced by the touching moments, the tragic with the uplifting. While the struggle with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease is certainly a painful one, it would be shortsighted to make music exclusively sorrowful about something so multifaceted. I believe that meaningful sadness in my work not only balances with happiness but depends on it; as Winnie the Pooh said, “How lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”

Perhaps the most multifaceted musician I have ever encountered.” –Carousel Magazine (The Creative Genius of Jim Glasgow, Feb 2017) ... more
